Cobalt regulations take effect in Kentucky

Cobalt regulations took effect in Kentucky on January 4, 2016. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission provided the following notification to horsemen:

Cobalt
  • Regulatory threshold of 25 ppb in serum
There is a tiered penalty schedule as follows:
  • Cobalt serum concentrations >25 ppb and • 50 ppb, for a first offense the trainer incurs a penalty ranging from written warning up to $500 fine AND horse is placed on the Veterinarian’s List until its serum concentration of cobalt is below 25 ppb.
  • Cobalt serum concentrations > 50 ppb, for a first offense the trainer incurs a 30- 60 day suspension and a fine of $500-$ 1,500. The horse is disqualified and purse monies earned redistributed. The horse is placed on the Veterinarian’s List until its serum concentration of cobalt is below 25 ppb.
