$800 Horse Raising Awareness For Thoroughbred Retirement

Roy Steele is a noted handicapper, largely thoroughbred, with a website called and a regular on Horse Racing Radio Network.

And just as one would expect, Steele has gambled on an $800 "bet" and won.

When returning from the Forest City sale in London, Ontario, a year ago, he happened across an estate auction on the road between London and Sarnia. The farm had belonged to Ike Matthews, who had been a small breeder of cattle and horses.

“There were all these animals among the construction equipment,” remembers Steele. “One of the horses was a pacing yearling by Whosurboy (Artsplace–Sweet Reflection, by Big Towner), who I like very much. His babies have gone for $20,000 to $30,000 at Harrisburg.

“This one was a bit undernourished, covered in mud, and sandwiched between a backhoe and a bulldozer. There was no one there apart from us. I paid $800 for him, on my credit card.”

The horse that was revealed once the mud was curried off, was pleasingly put together, and it didn’t take long to show he had some talent.

The Kentucky Senate's State and Local Government Committee on Wednesday voted 7-4 in favor of Senate Bill 151, a constitutional amendment that would put a question on the November ballot authorizing up to seven casinos in the state. The bill will be heard next on the Senate floor.

KY Casino Bill Hearing Today

Red Mile Back To Days

Despite gains in attendance and handle that were attributed to a switch to nights, the Red Mile will return to daytime racing for this year’s 2012 Grand Circuit meet.

The Grand Circuit meet will kick off Sept. 27 with a 1 pm post time.

“We’re changing it around because we wanted people to enjoy the whole Lexington experience,” said Frank Antonacci, one of the track’s owners. “We’re trying to balance between what’s best from the pari-mutuel side and people having fun. People told us they preferred we race during the day. At first, we thought
about racing nights the first week and days the second week, but we decided that people really enjoyed the daytime racing.”

The Red Mile was proud of its ability to lure younger customers last year at nights, something that will be a
challenge this year.

“We’re going to focus on getting the younger people to come to the early meet,” Antonacci said.

The annual Lexington sell, held in conjunction with the Red Mile’s Grand Circuit meet, will begin Tuesday, Oct. 2 and continue through Friday. It will begin each night at 7 p.m.

Northern Kid Partners Group to Host Open House

The Northern Kid Partners group has extended an invitation to an Open House and stallion showing for Kentucky’s new trotting stallion Northern Kid that will be held Sunday (February 5) from 12-2 p.m. at Walnut Hall Stock Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he will be standing for the 2012 breeding season.

The stallion showing will be at 1 p.m. and lunch will be served. Visitors may also register to win several prizes, including a free 2012 booking to Northern Kid.

Northern Kid 2,1:58.3; 3,1:57.1 has sired one small crop of racing age that already has three sub-2:00 performers including the 2011 Illinois stakes-winning filly Maevey Gravy 2,1:58.2. He is a son of Muscles Yankee and the American Winner mare Swift Kid Hanover, the same "Golden Cross" that produced world champion Muscle Hill 3,1:50.1 ($3,273,342).

The Northern Kid Partners group, which includes Walnut Hall Stock Farm’s Dr. James Sautter, agreed that Northern Kid would be a good option for Kentucky breeders, who have only a few choices when it comes to trotting sires. His stud fee will be $850.

As added incentive, the Northern Kid Partners are offering bonuses for Northern Kid’s foals of 2013 (mares bred in 2012). They include:

--If a 2-year-old colt or filly wins the Kentucky Fair Final--$1,000 bonus to breeder of mare plus 1 free breeding;

--If a 2 year-old colt or filly win the Kentucky Sire Stakes final—bonus of $2,000 paid to breeder of mare plus 1 free breeding;

--If a Northern Kid offspring sets a national’s season’s mark at any time during their 2-year-old season (as posted by the U.S. Trotting Association)--$500 to the current owner and trainer;

--If a Northern Kid offspring is a national season’s champion at the end of the year--$1,000 to the current owner and trainer;

--If a Northern Kid offspring wins the Hambletonian or Hambletonian Oaks--$5,000 to the current owner, trainer and breeder;

--If a Northern Kid offspring is a Dan Patch/USTA divisional award winner--$5,000 to the current owner, trainer and breeder.

The event will be held at the Walnut Hall Stock Farm foaling barn at 4201 Newtown Pike, Lexington, KY 40511. If you plan on attending please RSVP to 859.254.5660.
